Below is a thank-you note from a grateful student who benefited from funding which assisted him in his studies towards a Master of Music Therapy degree at Wilfrid Laurier University. What an inspiration for us to continue assisting such worthwhile students!

Dear Harmonize For Speech Fund,

I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude for being selected as the recipient of the 2017/2018 Harmonize For Speech, Master of Music Therapy Award.
I recently made a major life decision to leave my 10-year career in music teaching and performing in Malaysia, and return to school to be trained as a music therapist. I chose to travel across the world and to study at Wilfrid Laurier University because of their program’s reputation, the lack of music therapy training opportunities in Asia, and because of my personal desire to use music for positive change.
My experience at Laurier has been beyond my expectations. Through my in-class experiences and internships in the community, my understanding of music therapy and how it is applied in different clinical situations has grown tremendously. Over the last year, I have worked with clients from various walks of life. However, one client, in particular, has been influential in my development as a music therapist – someone who has been affected by aphasia. This experience has helped me understand how the lack of speech skills can negatively affect a person’s ability to communicate and to have meaningful social interaction. In addition, I have learned that music therapy can be used not only to rehabilitate but to increase their emotional and psychological well-being.
Through my study of music therapy at Laurier, I have realized the value of psychotherapy. As such, my goal for the near future is to seek further training in psychotherapy upon graduation. In addition to my current training, being accredited as a psychotherapist will give me additional tools to practice as a music therapist effectively and holistically.
I am absolutely thrilled and grateful to receive this award from the Harmonize For Speech Fund. This award is significant to me because it validates my decision to pursue training in Music Therapy and recognizes the challenging work that I have accomplished so far. As an international student funding my own education, this award is deeply appreciated and will go toward  textbooks and music resources that are crucial for my work in music therapy.
A donation such as this, especially for music therapy, is important because it recognizes a student’s academic achievements and motivates them to strive towards further knowledge and academic success. As I was not aware of the Harmonize For Speech Fund prior to this award, this donation also raises awareness for this charitable cause and music therapy’s important role in supporting people with communication disorders.
