We think that you, the supporters of Harmonize For Speech like to be updated with success stories where your funds have produced such uplifting stories. We hope that you will agree with us after reading the letter below received from the Adult Recreation Therapy Centre in Brantford, which we have supported since 2002.

Dear Harmonize For Speech Fund,

I am writing to thank you once again for your support of Aphasia Camp. Enclosed you will find a report describing our very successful Aphasia Camp 2016, which was supported by a $3,500.00 grant from Harmonize For Speech. Our camp was held at Tim Horton Onondaga Farms near Brantford on Sept. 23-25, 2016. It was a tremendous success! Some highlights:

  • 43 people with aphasia attended
  • 20 family members and friends attended
  • 40 staff, students and volunteers attended, including 10 – 2nd year Speech-Language Pathology students from Western University who earned clinical placement hours at camp

The feedback from people with aphasia and their families and friends indicates that it was an overwhelmingly positive experience for them. The SLPs, SLP students, and the undergrad students who hope to become SLPs, indicated that their camp experience has given them a much broader view of what constitutes therapy for people with aphasia, and what it is like for people to live with aphasia. Some examples of feedback received after camp:

  • Camp is wonderful, love all activities (person with aphasia)
  • All the people, being able to socialize with everyone (person with aphasia)
  • Seeing my spouse with aphasia being so relaxed and enjoying the activities on his own (caregiver)
  • After sharing with other caregivers, I learned ways to cope with the challenge of living with a spouse with aphasia (caregiver)
  • Getting to see how people with aphasia live their everyday lives, not just the hour you see them at therapy (volunteer)
  • It gave me the chance to connect with people living with aphasia and their caregivers. The experience will stay with me always (volunteer)
  • I am an undergrad student. This experience has confirmed for me that I want to pursue speech and will do my best to get into my Master’s (volunteer)

The speech programs of Brantford and Haldimand-Norfolk have enjoyed a long affiliation with the Barbershoppers, notably with the Simcoe Gentlemen of Harmony. Participants at Aphasia Camp 2016 were entertained by an excellent mini chorus from Simcoe who provided music and laughs Saturday evening during camp. We are all grateful that you found Aphasia Camp to be a project worthy of Harmonize For Speech funds. You can also see a published article entitled “Aphasia Camps as a Transformative Experience”.
